Asphalt & Composition Shingle Roofing

Asphalt Shingle Roofs Rated for North Texas Hail

Most Dallas-Fort Worth homes wear asphalt shingles, and most of those roofs are replaced because of hail, not age. We install architectural and Class 4 impact-resistant shingle systems over heat-rated underlayment with all-new flashing, and we hand you the product documentation your insurer asks for.

Is an asphalt shingle roof still a smart choice in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Yes, for a lot of homes. Asphalt costs far less up front than metal (metal typically runs two to three times as much), it satisfies nearly every HOA in the Metroplex, and a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle carries the same top UL 2218 hail rating that insurers reward. The trade-off is lifespan: a shingle sold as a 30-year product in a mild climate often lasts closer to 15 to 20 years under Texas sun.

Much of DFW’s housing was built in the 1980s and 1990s, so many houses here are already on their second or third shingle roof. Still comparing every material? Start with our Dallas-Fort Worth roofing overview. Shingles tend to fit best for:

  • Owners planning to sell within a few years
  • HOA neighborhoods in Frisco, McKinney and Plano where composition is the approved look
  • Insurance replacements that pay for like-kind materials
  • Anyone who wants Class 4 hail protection without the up-front price of metal

Which asphalt shingles do we install?

We install three tiers. For most DFW homes we recommend Class 4: it can earn an insurance credit and best survives the storms that end most roofs here.

Architectural shingles

Laminated layers give a textured, shadowed look. This is the standard DFW subdivision roof and our lowest-cost replacement. Most lines carry no impact rating, so no hail credit.

Class 4 impact-resistant shingles

Rubberized (SBS polymer-modified) asphalt or a reinforced mat lets the shingle flex instead of fracture. It must pass UL 2218 Class 4: a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking. It looks like a standard shingle.

Designer shingles

Heavier shingles cut to resemble slate or cedar shake. Some designer lines are Class 4 rated; we confirm the rating on the exact product before you sign.

How do shingle options compare with standing seam metal?

Architectural shingles win on price, Class 4 shingles win on value in hail country, and standing seam metal wins on lifespan.

How do we install a shingle roof that holds up to Texas heat and hail?

A shingle is only as good as the system under it. We tear off to the deck and rebuild the roof from the wood up:

  1. Tear-off and deck check. Soft or delaminated decking is replaced at a per-sheet price listed on your estimate, so there is no surprise add-on.
  2. Heat-rated underlayment. High-temperature synthetic in the field, plus self-adhered ice-and-water membrane in valleys, at eaves and around penetrations. DFW code does not require it at the eaves, but Winter Storm Uri and the 89-hour freeze of January 2024 are why we include it.
  3. All-new flashing. Drip edge, step and counter flashing and pipe boots are replaced, never reused.
  4. High-wind nailing. We follow the manufacturer’s high-wind pattern where the product calls for it; the May 2024 storm brought gusts near 80 mph.
  5. Balanced ventilation. Soffit intake and ridge exhaust keep attic heat from baking shingles from below, and we can pair the roof with new vented soffit and fascia.
  6. Permit and paperwork. We pull the re-roof permit, run a magnetic nail sweep and give you the product labels and installation record for your insurer.

Why do Class 4 shingles matter so much in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Because hail, not age, ends most DFW roofs. Texas has led the nation in major hail events for 11 straight years according to NICB/Verisk analysis, Dallas sees roughly 10 to 20 hail events in a typical year, and Tarrant County has logged 126 severe-hail days since 2000. State Farm alone handled about 95,200 Texas hail claims in 2025, averaging roughly $15,000 each, and insurance-industry research shows homes with impact-resistant roofs have about a 40% lower hail claim rate.

Will a Class 4 roof lower my insurance premium?

It can, but no one can honestly promise a number. The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) recognizes roofing tested to UL 2218 Classes 1 through 4, with Class 4 earning the highest credit, but each carrier sets its own credit and paperwork rules. Reported discounts in 2025-2026 run roughly 5% to 35% off the wind/hail portion of the premium, and DFW premiums commonly reach $5,400-$6,200 a year. Roof age matters too: many Texas carriers shift roofs older than 10 to 20 years to actual cash value (ACV) at renewal, which can leave a 15-year-old roof insured for a fraction of its replacement cost. Ask your agent before you choose a shingle.

How does Texas heat age a shingle roof?

DFW averages about 20 days a year at or above 100°F (2023 had 55), and summer UV regularly hits 9 or 10. Heat drives oils out of the asphalt and UV loosens granules, so shingles stiffen and lose impact resistance with age. In climate zone 3A, lighter colors and good attic airflow help both the roof and your AC.

Can my HOA say no to impact-resistant shingles?

Generally not. Texas Property Code §202.011 bars HOAs from prohibiting wind- and hail-resistant or energy-efficient shingles that resemble the approved shingles, are equal or better in quality and durability, and match neighboring homes. Class 4 shingles look standard, and we prepare the review submittal with samples.

What does a shingle roof cost in Dallas-Fort Worth (as of 2026)?

The typical installed price for architectural asphalt shingles is about $5.00 to $8.50 per square foot of roof as of 2026, averaging around $6.15, which puts a 1,700-square-foot roof at roughly $8,500 to $15,000. Class 4 lines cost more, and we price both side by side in writing. What moves your number:

  • Roof area, pitch and the number of layers coming off
  • Decking replacement and flashing work at valleys, chimneys and skylights
  • The shingle line: architectural, Class 4 or designer
  • Ventilation upgrades and gutter or fascia work done at the same time

Over 50 years, a DFW home may go through two or three shingle roofs for every metal roof, so we show the lifetime math next to the up-front price. See our lifetime roofing guide for that comparison and the warranty page for what our workmanship coverage includes.

When should you choose shingles, metal or a repair instead?

Asphalt fits when up-front cost, HOA rules or a short stay drive the decision. Look elsewhere in these cases:

What Dallas-Fort Worth Homeowners Say About Texas Metal Panels

Asphalt shingle roofing questions from DFW homeowners

How much does a shingle roof cost in Dallas?

As of 2026, architectural asphalt shingles typically cost about $5.00 to $8.50 per square foot installed in DFW, or roughly $8,500 to $15,000 for a 1,700-square-foot roof. Class 4 lines cost more. Pitch, tear-off layers, decking and flashing move the final number, so we quote in writing after measuring.

Are Class 4 shingles worth it in Texas?

For most DFW homes, yes. Texas has led the nation in major hail events for 11 straight years, and homes with impact-resistant roofs show about a 40% lower hail claim rate. A Class 4 shingle may also qualify for an insurance credit. If you are selling within a year or two, standard architectural shingles can make more sense.

How much is the insurance discount for a Class 4 roof in Texas?

It depends on your carrier. TDI recognizes UL 2218 impact ratings, but each insurer sets its own credit and paperwork rules. Reported discounts in 2025-2026 run roughly 5% to 35% of the wind/hail portion of the premium. Ask your agent first; we provide the labels and installation record they request.

How long do shingles last in Texas heat?

Typically 15 to 20 years in Dallas-Fort Worth, even when the shingle carries a 30-year label meant for milder climates. Heat, UV and hail are the reasons. Balanced attic ventilation and a lighter color help a shingle roof reach the upper end of that range.

Metal roof vs shingles: which is better for DFW?

Metal typically lasts 40 to 70 years versus 15 to 20 for shingles and handles heat better, but it costs roughly two to three times as much up front. Class 4 shingles are the value pick when budget, HOA rules or a shorter stay matter most. We quote both so you can compare lifetime cost.

Do I need a permit to replace a shingle roof in Dallas or Fort Worth?

Yes. Dallas requires a re-roof permit for a whole-roof replacement, and Fort Worth requires a building permit even for a same-material re-roof, typically approved in about three business days. We pull the permit on every replacement and handle the rules in other DFW cities too.
